Ferguson through the eye of the visual artist."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paintings are a way of seeing history through someone\u00a0else&#8217;s\u00a0eyes, they are\u00a0the creator&#8217;s expression of the human experience\u00a0and\u00a0represent the mental and physical world\u00a0of humans\u00a0and\u00a0their personal interactions with society\u00a0(cite).\u00a0\u00a0Every painting\u00a0embodies a\u00a0history.\u00a0 A\u00a0history\u00a0of what the\u00a0artist was thinking, feeling, seeing in the society at that time;\u00a0a\u00a0history\u00a0of\u00a0how they created the painting-\u00a0their techniques, materials,\u00a0where it has been, how it has traveled all tell a story. Paintings also tell a history\u00a0of\u00a0how society through time has responded to the art-\u00a0what were other\u00a0artists\u00a0painting, who were the critics,  and how did the public interpret it through\u00a0the\u00a0years?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;Think of&nbsp;a painting&nbsp;as a historical&nbsp;interpretation.&nbsp;Artists&nbsp;use&nbsp;various&nbsp;process,&nbsp;techniques&nbsp;and&nbsp;abstract concepts to&nbsp;illustrate&nbsp;life&nbsp;through their own&nbsp;experience&nbsp;and perspective, they&nbsp;have&nbsp;a specific&nbsp;reason for&nbsp;creating&nbsp;the&nbsp;painting,&nbsp;but&nbsp;they&nbsp;also&nbsp;make a&nbsp;space for&nbsp;you&nbsp;to create your&nbsp;own meaning.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Researchers characterize&nbsp;art&nbsp;in many different ways:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A creation, a cultural artifact&nbsp;that is&nbsp;an&nbsp;embodiment or&nbsp;an&nbsp;expression of the&nbsp;creator&#8217;s&nbsp;views and emotions.&nbsp;(cite),&nbsp;<\/li><li>A&nbsp;visual&nbsp;product and process that is personal and unique&nbsp;(cite) and <\/li><li>An&nbsp;experience&nbsp;created by&nbsp;its&nbsp;aesthetic capacity&nbsp;to&nbsp;elicit&nbsp;emotions&nbsp;and&nbsp;questions&nbsp;that engage&nbsp;Individuals&nbsp;in their own unique ways&nbsp;(Greene 1991).&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In this module you will:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explore how the experiences of two artists influence their interpretation and response to the Plessy v. Ferguson 1896 &#8216;Separate but Equal&#8217; doctrine in the 1940&#8217;s and 1960&#8217;s by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Using artistic conventions and codes as clues to interrogate the representation of&nbsp;Plessy v. Ferguson in the artwork.<\/li><li>Interpreting symbolic meanings of the work to \u2018read in-between the lines\u201d&nbsp;to see what the artist is trying to say about &#8220;Separate but Equal&#8221; doctrine.<\/li><li>Placing the artwork in a larger historical context and make an argument for its place- as an object and as a creation in that the decades surrounding the Plessy v.
